How to make NFL Week 17 competitive
Posted: 1/8/2010 12:49 pm
Mitch was talking to Peter King this morning and they discussed NFL Week 17 and how it's such a bad week of football because of teams not trying to win (i.e. Colts, Saints, Bengals). PK was talking about awarding "sandwich" draft picks to incentivize teams to try.
I have another idea. It's been shot down by others, but dammit it's a good one! Playoff SEEDING should be determined by team records in the 2nd half of the season. Just talking about seeding, not talking about which teams get in. Getting IN to the playoffs still depends on your total record. But of the 6 teams (in each conference) that make the playoffs, where they are SEEDED (#1 thru #6) would be based on those last 8 games. So yeah, if a team started 2-6 and then went 8-0 and got into the playoffs with a 10-6 record, they would be the #1 seed with homefield throughout the playoffs. This is fine with me. Let's see the Colts surrender their last two games if it means they might not get homefield and the #1 seed. Wouldn't happen.
Some considerations would have to be made to scheduling to make it fair. Teams would have to play each of the teams in their division one time in the first half of the season and one time in the second half, for example.
